What is Rapid Testing?
Rapid HIV tests are the same as standard HIV tests (Western Blot and ELISA) in that they test for the presence of HIV antibodies in a person's blood that indicates HIV exposure and infection. While standard HIV tests draw a vile of blood that is sent to a laboratory for tests, Rapid HIV tests draw a small amount of blood or oral fluid that is tested at the counseling facility. You will not have to return to the testing site at a later date for your results.

How much does it cost?
The test is currently free. Grants have funded the pilot sites and the test kits. However, some testing sites are currently asking for an administrative fee or a suggested donation (between $10 - $20).

Is it still anonymous?
Yes. No names will be used to identify you to the state, your employer, your healthcare provider or anybody else without your expressed written permission. Your visit will also be confidential. Nothing you discuss with us will ever be told to anybody else.

What is the procedure?
A small amount of blood is drawn through a finger prick (much like diabetics use to test blood glucose levels) or if you choose you can have the oral fluid test which uses the same test kit. The drop of blood or oral fluid is then mixed in a vile with solution and a test stick is placed in the solution. After 20 minutes, the test stick will show if the test has worked and whether the presence of HIV antibodies has been found.

Who should get tested?
Every sexually active gay or bisexual man or men who have sex with men but don't identify as gay or bisexual, should be tested for HIV. Those with other high risk factors for HIV (i.e. intravenous drug use, unprotected anal sex, multiple sex partners, the presence of other sexually transmitted diseases, healthcare exposure, etc), should also be tested.

How accurate are the results?
The results of the Rapid HIV test are as accurate as other HIV tests. Current accuracy is around 99.6%. Four out of 1000 test have the potential to be inaccurate.

If my test results are negative, does that mean I don't have HIV?
Not necessarily. At a minimum, it takes three months for enough HIV antibodies (the body's response to infection) to be present in a person's blood or oral fluids to react with the test. A negative test means you were negative three months before taking the test. However, if you have had no sexual contact or been involved in any other risk factors for three months prior to the test, then the results are accurate for the day of the test.

What happens if my test is reactive?
A reactive test means the test has reacted with antibodies in your blood or oral fluids. A second confirmatory test through a blood draw at another clinic or county health department will be required if your test is reactive. Should your confirmatory test show the definitive presence of HIV antibodies in your blood or oral fluid, additional medical care and advice will be made available to you.
